Clips about anti-racism

'A very powerful ad'
Today we've been watching different videos on youtube. They all had in common that they were against racism, discrimination and bad behavior. The one I'd like to tell you about is called 'a very powerful ad'. It’s about adults whose behavior is totally irresponsible, and how young people and children are learning from it. A picture of small children who follow different adults and act the same as them helps us understanding this. So every time the adults yell at each other ore smoke or drink, the child does the same. This i caused by the fact that parents are one of the first and one of the biggest influences in a child's life, especially when very young and of cause the young ones act the same because they get affected by it and don't know any better.

Stereotype

The concept
A stereotype is someone who has specific features. Often they occur in groups who dress and act similar to each other. An example could be the Blondie's whose characteristics are long blond hair and high heels. They are less intelligent and talk shit about people. You can compare stereotypes with prejudice.

You can define a stereotype by looking at this:

  • Specific features
  • clothing
  • interest
  • looks
  • behavior
  • popularity
  • intelligence

Stereotyping is the lowest and quickest form of identification, because its a way of generalizing people and not the specific person.

Clueless - the film

Identity concept
Tai (15), also known as ’clueless’ starts on a high school in America. She has no idea about how to dress correctly, speak correctly ore even behave correctly according to Dion and Cheer. Therefore the two girls transform her into an almost good-looking girl. As she starts to hang out with them, they try to make her like a boy called Elton, and they look beyond the fact that who she really likes is a skater boy called Travis. But as Tai become more and more popular, she slowly forgets about Travis, and one thing makes her completely forget about him; Cheer, Christian and Tai go to the mall, and as Tai is chatting with some guys then all of a sudden, they make fun of her by almost letting her fall down from the side of the Staircase. Luckily Christian comes and saves her in time, but now the whole school finds her to be amazing because she was ’close to dying’.

You can't describe her clothes to be modern. It’s more a last-minute-solution of something comfortable and practical. But after Dion and Cheer help her with a makeover, she starts wearing really nice clothes witch matches theirs. So you can say that she is very much controlled by the two of them and she almost doesn’t have any influence on her life herself.

Tai is a very innocent and cultural kind of stereotype. She is very naive, and believes in whatever Cher or Dion tells her. During the film she become more independent and forgets about the girls. I think she is trying to be nice to everyone, and wouldn’t want anyone to be sad ore jealous but anyway, that’s how she makes Cher feel. Cher feels like Tai has taken over her role as the popular and perfect girl who everybody seeks for. She changes depending in witch situation she is in.
